How to Measure for Drapery

When it comes to custom drapery, precise measurements make all the difference. A perfectly measured panel not only enhances the beauty of your windows but also ensures smooth functionality and a refined, tailored finish. 

Before you begin, decide whether your drapery will be full-functioning panels or side decorative panels – this choice has a big impact on both the look and practicality of your design. 

Full-Function Drapery Panels 

Full-function drapery panels are operable, meaning they open and close completely to control light, privacy, and insulation. These panels are made with enough fullness to cover the entire window when drawn and can be lined or interlined for added protection and durability. 

How to Measure:

• Measure the width of your window from outer frame to outer frame.
• Extend your rod about 6 inches beyond the frame on each side. This helps the drapery stack off the glass when open and makes the window appear larger.
• Add those 12 inches to your window width – this is your total drapery width.
• If you’re installing two panels, divide this total in half to get the width of each panel.

Wall-to-Wall Drapery 

For a seamless, luxurious look, consider wall-to-wall drapery – where panels extend from one side of the wall to the other rather than stopping at the window edge.
This approach adds height, drama, and softness to a space, while giving you maximum flexibility for light control and layering. Wall-to-wall installations pair beautifully with sheers or motorized shades for a complete designer finish. 

Side Decorative Panels 

Side panels are stationary, decorative, and designed purely for aesthetics. They frame the window beautifully, but do not move to cover it. 

When measuring side panels: 

• Decide how much wall space you’d like to cover.
• Extend the fabric about 6 inches beyond the window frame for balance and proportion. 

Because they’re fixed, decorative panels are narrower than functional ones and are often layered with blinds or roller shades for privacy and light management.
This layered look offers the perfect blend of function and beauty – ideal for living rooms, dining rooms, or spaces where design takes center stage. 

Determining Your Drapery Length 

Once you’ve chosen your panel type, decide how long you’d like the drapery to fall. 

Mount Height:
Install your rod 4–6 inches above the window frame for a more elevated, elongated look, or halfway between the top of the window and the ceiling for a grander effect. 

Measure From: 
Measure from the top of the rod or track (not the frame) to your desired finished length. 

Length Options: 

• Kiss the floor: Measure to the floor exactly. 

• Hover above the floor: Subtract ¼ inch. 

• Break on the floor: Add about 2 inches. 

• Puddle on the floor: Add 6–8 inches for a soft, romantic drape.
